The Island Country Club’s first Island Club Open Doubles Tournament was a competitive success.
A total of 30 teams played in four divisions.
The Women’s 3.5 Division saw Mary John Thornton and Fia Kaplan winning the championship over Margi Eichman and Marilyn Wrucke, 6-1, 6-3.
The Men’s 3.5 event was won by George Hayden and Luis Benito in two sets, defeating Michael Kanan and Corky Trebilcock, 6-1 and 6-3 in the final.
Linda Mitchell and Martha Spaulding made a last-ditch come back in a third set tie breaker to win the women’s 4.0 Division over Rachel Schenk and Maria Hayden, 7-6, 1-6 and 10 to 8 in the tie breaker.
The Men’s 4.0 final was just as tight. Joe Magdalener and Rick Eichman snuck by Lynn Orr and Brock Wilson 7-6, 3-6 and 11 to 9 in the match-deciding tiebreaker.
The consolation events were won by Clay Zyerfeld and Ray Jean in the Men’s 4.0
The women’s 4.0 consolation was taken by Ann Campisi and Mary Husted.
Mel Daly and Mo Johnson captured the 3.5 men’s consolation, while the women’s consolation was won by Louise Jean and Joan Boissie.
Great crowds were on hand to cheer on the matches all weekend and the final two 4.0 level matches that were both decided by tiebreakers had them biting their nails until the final shot was struck.
The next big public tennis tournament at the Island Club will be the Open Mixed Doubles Championship in the spring.
